Greek giants Olympiacos have officially announced the signing of Nigerian international Bruno Onyemaechi from Portuguese side Boavista, Soccernet.football reports.
The 25-year-old left-back joins the 47-time Greek champions in what is a major step forward in his burgeoning career.
Onyemaechi’s arrival makes him the seventh Nigerian to don the famous red-and-white stripes of Olympiacos, following in the footsteps of Rashidi Yekini, Haruna Babangida, Michael Olaitan, Brown Ideye, Emmanuel Emenike, and Henry Onyekuru. Among them, Ideye remains the most prolific Nigerian for the club, with 65 appearances and 28 goals to his name.
Born in Owerri, Nigeria, on April 3, 1999, Onyemaechi’s journey to the top has been defined by hard work and steady progression.
His performances in the Portuguese Primeira Liga with Boavista over the last two seasons have caught the attention of Europe’s top clubs.
During his time in Portugal, Onyemaechi made 77 appearances, scoring five goals and providing three assists. This season, he has been in fine form, contributing three goals and one assist in just 18 matches.
Olympiacos are not only banking on Onyemaechi’s technical ability but also his versatility and experience on the international stage. The defender has earned 11 caps for Nigeria since his debut in 2023, which came in the Super Eagles’ emphatic 6-0 victory over São Tomé and Príncipe. He was also part of the squad that finished runners-up at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
By signing for Olympiacos, Onyemaechi has a chance to compete at the highest level, with the Greek champions currently leading the Super League Greece table and battling for the UEFA Europa League playoff stages.
