Ronaldo, 39, and the Portuguese team faced a tough defeat in the quarter-finals, losing to France on penalties following a goalless draw after extra time. This loss has sparked speculation that the tournament in Germany might be Ronaldo’s final appearance for his national team.
Ronaldo holds the record for the most goals scored in international football, with 130 goals in 212 matches for Portugal. However, he struggled during Euro 2024, failing to score in his 23 attempts on goal.
His performances were widely criticised, especially after he missed a penalty against Slovenia and was visibly emotional after the defeat to France.
When asked if Ronaldo’s career with Portugal might end on this note, Martinez responded: “No. Everything is too raw. We are still suffering the defeat. There are no individual decisions at this point.”
Ronaldo will soon head back to Saudi Arabia to prepare for the next season with his club, Al-Nassr.
He will need to decide whether he wants to continue playing for Portugal. Reports suggest that he is keen to keep playing and aims to compete in the next World Cup in 2026 when he will be 41 years old.
