Former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has backed Brazil’s Vinicius Junior to win this year’s Ballon d’Or following an extraordinary campaign for the Spanish giants, Soccernet.football reports.
Vinicius became the favourite to win the best player in the world award after he inspired Real Madrid to win the UEFA Champions League trophy and wrestle La Liga from arch-rivals Barcelona.
However, the exciting forward’s chances took a big hit after Brazil failed to make it past the knockout rounds of Copa America this summer.
While Vinicius and Brazil struggled, Manchester City’s Rodri impressed as Spain defeated all foes to win Euro 2024 in Germany.
The Spanish midfielder has shot up the ratings following that feat but so has England’s Jude Bellingham, who reached the final of the Euros.
Lautaro Martinez will also be a top contender for the Ballon d’Or after winning the Italian Serie A with Inter Milan and then finishing as the top scorer as Argentina won the Copa.
Despite all these top-rated challengers, Benzema is convinced that Vinicius is the clear favourite to win the Ballon d’Or.
“I’m going to say Vini because he deserves it for his season and not just for what he’s done this year, but also for what he’s done last year,” Benzema said as per ManagingMadrid. He was also above the rest with his football and what he does with the ball. He’s a complete footballer.”
Regarding Vini’s best qualities as a footballer, Benzema said: “He can win a game on his own, of course, with the help of his teammates, but he is very good when Real Madrid needs him, and that is why I think he deserves it. He is always there, and he always shows up. For all of that, my favourite is Vini.”
Benzema spent 14 years at Real Madrid where he won 25 trophies, including four La Liga, three Copa del Rey, and five UEFA Champions League titles.
