Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior were the goal scorers as Real Madrid sealed their 15th Champions League title with a 2-0 victory at Wembley Stadium.
How it happened
Record UEFA Champions League winners Real Madrid were the overwhelming favourites before kickoff over an opponent that had previously won the continent’s top prize only once.
Los Blancos bossed the early possession but it was Borussia Dortmund who would have cursed their luck that halftime scores stood at goalless after missing the best chances in the opening period.
The first big opportunity of the game went Dortmund’s way. Fullkrug brought down a long ball in the box superbly and played a pass into Brandt. His first touch was good, but he sliced his second well wide of the far post from about ten yards.
Adeyemi had an even better chance minutes later after timing his run to perfection to get in behind and through on goal. Courtois flew off his line, allowing the Dortmund man to skip around him, but he went too far wide and Carvajal stopped his final ball from rolling into the net.
Moments later, Fullkrug hit the post for Dortmund when it looked easier to score. Maatsen surged forward and slipped a delightful pass through for the striker, who took it first time and and watched as the ball hit the inside of the post and rolled back towards the line, but not over it.
Fullkrug missed another massive chance for Dortmund before Adeyemi failed to connect with a brilliant counterattack from the Germans.
Real Madrid would have been the happier of the two teams at halftime.
After a disappointing half, Real Madrid became the first team to fail to register a single shot on target in the first half of a UEFA Champions League final since Tottenham against Liverpool in 2019. Carlo Ancelotti’s men had only two shots in the first half, their joint-fewest in the opening half of a game across all competitions this season.
Real Madrid looked to respond after the break but Dortmund goalkeeper Kobel denied Kroos a farewell goal.
In the 57th minute, Madrid fans finally had something to cheer as Carvajal connected with a cross at the far post and drilled a low volley at goal but his effort was stopped by the goalkeeper.
Madrid then had goalkeeper Courtois to thank as he kept a firm Fullkrug header away from goal after the striker was found unmarked by Adeyemi’s cross.
Finally and totally against the run of play, Real Madrid took the lead. Kroos stepped up and delivered a dream ball in from a corner which Carvajal met at the near post with a lovely glancing header that sailed beyond Kobel.
Dortmund lost their bearing with that goal but for Kobel, they would have gone two-goal down first with an effort from Camavinga and shortly later Nacho.
However, the momentum had swung Madrid’s way and there was no stopping the effervescent Vinicius Jr from adding the second goal for the Spanish champions in the 83rd minute.
Moments later, Fullkrug thought he had reduced the deficit for Dortmund but the linesman accurately adjudged him to be in an offside position before heading the ball home.
The records followed Madrid’s triumph as this is the first time in their history that they have navigated a Champions League campaign without suffering a single loss.
Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, already in a class of his own, added a record fifth European Cup triumph to his collection.
