Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who recently took control of Manchester United’s sporting operations, is looking to make significant changes at Old Trafford.
According to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Ratcliffe is planning an ambitious bid for Watkins who is seen as an ideal candidate to lead United’s attack for the long term.
However, prying Watkins away from Villa will be challenging. The 28-year-old’s contract runs until 2028, and Villa will demand a substantial fee.
Watkins has had an impressive season with Villa, scoring 27 goals and providing 13 assists in 52 appearances. His goal-plus-assist tally matches that of Manchester City star Erling Haaland.
The England international also has a chance to become Villa’s all-time top scorer in a single Premier League season, currently tied with Christian Benteke at 19 goals.
Watkins will have the opportunity to surpass Benteke’s record in Villa’s final game of the season against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
His performances have made him a strong contender for England’s Euro 2024 squad, especially with manager Gareth Southgate able to select up to 26 players.
Manchester United are in need of a new centre-forward as Anthony Martial is set to leave when his contract expires. Martial’s departure is part of a broader overhaul planned by Ratcliffe in his first transfer window in charge.
Raphael Varane, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Casemiro, Antony, and Christian Eriksen are also expected to leave Old Trafford as part of this revamp.
