Williams was awarded the LALIGA EA SPORTS African MVP, a prize recognizing top African talent in the league, after an excellent campaign in the Spanish top flight.
He triumphed over competitors such as Morocco’s Brahim Diaz of Real Madrid, Sevilla’s Youssef En-Nesyri, Real Sociedad’s Hamari Traore, Villarreal’s Bertrand Traore, and Celta Vigo’s Jonathan Bamba.
Williams received the trophy from Athletic Bilbao legend Andoni Goikoetxea, succeeding last year’s winner, Samuel Chukwueze.
In his acceptance speech, Williams expressed his his deep connection to Ghana and his love for Bilbao and Athletic Club.
“My roots in Ghana are as deep as my love for Bilbao and Athletic Club. I hope to be in contention for this same award next season,” he told SuperSport.
During the season, Williams scored 12 goals and provided three assists in 34 La Liga games. He also contributed two goals and two assists in the Copa del Rey, helping Bilbao win the cup.
Williams received 46 points, or 24% of the votes, after a rigorous voting process involving African journalists from 31 countries and fan votes. Brahim Diaz came second with 37 points, followed by Youssef En-Nesyri with 30 points.
