This comes after Ederson suffered a fractured eye socket during their recent victory against Tottenham Hotspur.
The injury occurred during a collision with Cristian Romero in the second half of the match, which City won 2-0 to return to the top of the league table.
Despite the win, Ederson’s absence will be felt in the remaining fixtures of the season.
City confirmed the extent of the injury on their official website, stating that scans revealed a small fracture to Ederson’s right eye socket. As a result, he will play no further part in the current season.
“The Brazilian goalkeeper suffered the injury during our 2-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday evening,” City said on their official website. “He has since undergone scans of the affected area that have revealed a small fracture to the right eye socket.
“The injury will prevent Ederson from playing any further part in the remaining games of the 2023/24 season. Everyone at the Club wishes Ederson a speedy recovery.”
In Ederson’s absence, substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega stepped in and made significant saves, notably a crucial stop against Son Heung-min in the 86th minute.
Manager Pep Guardiola praised Ortega’s performance, highlighting his talent in one-on-one situations.
“He defined, I would say, how the team is a team,” Pep Guardiola said of his German ‘keeper. “Ortega saved the actions otherwise Arsenal will be champions.
“He has this talent. In one-on-ones, he is one of the best ‘keepers I’ve ever seen in my life.
“It’s the German culture, stand up, don’t go down, it’s really, really good. He’s played in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, Ederson has four times setback for injuries. He’s so reliable and an incredible ‘keeper. The club made an incredible decision to bring him here.”
Manchester City’s quest for a fourth successive title hinges on their upcoming match against West Ham United. They must secure a victory to maintain their title challenge or match Arsenal’s result against Everton.
