Ten Hag’s second season at United has been one to forget for the Red Devils, fueling speculations he may be relieved of his duties at the end of the campaign.
Man United lost 1-0 at home to title-chasing Arsenal at Old Trafford on Sunday, the 14th league defeat of the campaign and the most the club has suffered in Premier League history.
Erik ten Hag’s men are condemned to finish outside of the Champions League places, and the Dutch manager could have his fate sealed should United lose the FA Cup final to bitter rivals Man City.
Southgate is one of the managers who could take over Man United in the event of a manager vacancy, with the former Middlesbrough man impressing and leading the Three Lions with distinction since 2016.
The 53-year-old is into the final six months of his contract as he takes England to the 2024 European Championships – his fourth major tournament.
Southgate has, however, played down links to the Manchester United job, insisting that winning the Euro Cup remains his number-one focus.
“Well, for me, it’s not an issue and never has been,” Southgate told the BBC.
“I have to deliver a successful tournament for England and there’s enough work involved in that. I think everybody would expect that’s where my focus should be.
“There will always be speculation about managers, because if you lose a couple of games, you’re in trouble – you win a couple of games and it is a different agenda,” Southgate said.
“But for me, it [Euro 2024] is a brilliant opportunity. We’re looking forward to the tournament. My focus is on how do we go a step further than we went in the last Euros [when they were beaten on penalties in the final by Italy].”
England have not won a major tournament since lifting the 1966 World Cup, with the Three Lions losing to France in the quarterfinals in Qatar.
