Inter Miami forward Suarez spent three fruitful years at Liverpool, during which time he scored 82 goals and claimed 36 assists, winning the Football League Cup. Suarez left Anfield for Nou Camp in 2024, where he won numerous titles and individual honours.
Liverpool have banked on another Uruguayan forward to lead to more success, with the signing of Darwin Nunez from Benfica in July 2022 for €85 million.
Interestingly, Nunez was sent off on his Anfield debut as Liverpool tackled Crystal Palace. The ex-UD Almería striker received his marching orders after he head-butted Palace defender Joachim Andersen.
Nunez, attempting to show how close he is to Suarez and how much advice he takes from his older compatriot, reveals the former Barca ace slammed him for that controversial moment.
“Off the field, we have a very good bond. I always follow him because Luis is an idol for me, and he also advises me a lot,” Nunez told ESPN Uruguay about Suarez, who was not a stranger to controversy during his career.
“For example, the time the headbutt thing happened [against Crystal Palace], Luis was the first to write to me.
“‘You idiot, don’t do that. Another idiot is talking to you, and he’s done it a thousand times,’ he told me. With Luis, we created a very nice bond.”
Nunez, who had 18 goals and 13 assists in all competitions for Liverpool this season, has already been linked with a move away from Anfield.
Barcelona are one of the clubs being linked with the 24-year-old marksman who has failed to convince in England fully.
