Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde were the goalscorers as Real Madrid claimed their sixth UEFA Super Cup with a 2-0 victory over Atalanta on Wednesday night, Soccernet.football reports.
Atalanta did well to keep Carlo Ancelotti’s men quiet in the opening half but the Champions League winners were unstoppable after the break to lift their first trophy of the season.
Record European Cup winners Real Madrid were the clear favourites to romp to victory over an Atalanta side making their first appearance in the Super Cup and the Spaniards did not disappoint.
Although, despite unleashing a front three of Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo, and new signing Mbappe, Real Madrid could not stamp their authority on the game in the first period.
However, the reigning Spanish champions cranked up the level after the break and broke the deadlock just before the hour-mark after Valverde put the finishing touch to a fine Vinicius move.
Eight minutes later, Mbappe announced his arrival in style as he managed to find space inside the Atalanta area to connect with a Jude Bellingham pass and smash the ball into the top corner.
Atalanta, who made light work of Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final back in May, could not muster a response until the final whistle despite the best efforts of star forward Ademola Lookman.
In the end, it was a deserving victory for Real Madrid who clinched their first UEFA Super Cup since 2022.
The European champions will now turn their focus on retaining the Champions League and La Liga titles they won last season.
