De Rossi watched helplessly as Bayer Leverkusen took his AS Roma to the cleaners on Thursday, claiming a 2-0 victory in the first leg of their Europa League semifinal clash.
Roma had more possession on the night, but Leverkusen were more clinical, as goals from Florian Wirtz and Robert Andrich on either side of the halftime break handed the Germans the advantage.
The Giallorossi would need a massive result in the second leg at the BayerArena against a Bayer Leverkusen side that just equalled a 48-game European unbeaten record.
De Rossi knows the magnitude of the task at hand and sought the advice of Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri on how to beat Xavi Alonso’s unstoppable men.
The five-time Serie A winner advised his younger compatriot to set AS Roma up to keep things tight for an hour before pushing for the result they need.
“You believe,” De Rossi said, as per Football Italia, when asked about the gameplan he will take to Germany.
“If you think about the first 28 minutes, we had a big chance, were aggressive, saw a lot of the ball, overall had 68 per cent possession.
“We also mustn’t be hasty, it’s not like we need to overturn five goals, it’s two. I even asked Allegri for advice and he said you can score at the 60th and still do it.
“We’ve seen what Bayer Leverkusen are like when they break the first press and have space to run into, so we need to be energetic and intense but also intelligent.”
AS Roma were forced to a 1-1 draw by Juventus on Sunday.
