Lionel Messi has acknowledged that his career as a professional footballer is nearing its end after helping Argentina reach another Copa America final, Soccernet.football reports.
The football legend spoke about cherishing his final moments on the field with his teammates.
Argentina secured a 2-0 win against Canada, with Julian Alvarez scoring early in the first half and Messi adding another goal in the 51st minute. After the match, Messi reflected on wearing the iconic Albiceleste jersey, knowing his time in the game is limited.
“I am aware that these are the last few battles, that is why I am enjoying it very much,” said Messi. “Let’s enjoy everything that we are living and enjoying as a national team. It is not easy to get to another final.
“We have to take advantage because it’s not something easy. These are some of my last battles and I have to enjoy.”
Messi also praised his team, saying, “It’s crazy what this group has been doing, what the Argentine National Team has been doing because a lot of importance is being given to the finals that I and all of the old team played in.
“It’s amazing that we’re in a new final. It wasn’t an easy cup: very tough teams, very bad pitches, and the heat makes it very hard. It’s worth enjoying being in a new final.”
At 37, Messi admitted that maintaining top performance is becoming more challenging. However, in the locker room, he shifted from reflection to motivation, urging his teammates to focus on the final step ahead.
Argentina will face either Uruguay or Colombia in the Copa America final in Miami Gardens, Florida, on July 14.
Albiceleste has won the title 15 times, tying with Uruguay for the most victories in the competition’s history. A win in the upcoming final would make Argentina the top nation in tournament history.
Messi’s career with Argentina includes significant achievements, such as winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the 2021 Copa America, and the 2022 UEFA Cup of Champions with a 3-0 victory over Mexico.
