Former Arsenal star Robert Pires has expressed support for Marcus Rashford potentially joining Arsenal, following news that Manchester United might allow the striker to leave, Soccernet.football reports.
Pires wants Arsenal to replicate the success they had with Kai Havertz, who joined the club from Chelsea and became a fan favourite after a strong debut season.
Reports indicate Rashford is considering a move to the Emirates Stadium, as Manchester United is open to his departure this summer.
Rashford had a tough season with Manchester United, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in 43 games. Despite the team’s eighth-place finish, they qualified for the Europa League by winning the FA Cup.
Rashford and his agent brother are expected to meet with United officials to discuss his future.
While United would prefer to retain Rashford and help him regain his 2022-23 form, they have not ruled out his exit due to his strained relationship with manager Erik ten Hag. Rashford, who signed a new contract last summer, would not be a cheap acquisition.
Arsenal has previously been linked with Rashford, and former forward Emmanuel Petit has also endorsed the move, comparing it to Havertz’s transfer.
Petit told Boyle Sports: “I know Kai Havertz has improved massively at Arsenal, but it’s difficult to say whether Arteta could do the same with Rashford if he moved to the club.
“However, I have no doubt that Rashford needs a new start and I think Arsenal could be perfect for him. We all know the quality of Rashford for what he’s done in years at Man United, but everyone questioned Havertz and his position when he moved from Chelsea.”
Petit added: “Would Rashford be good at Arsenal? Give me the paper, and let me sign it for him right now! Rashford in a good environment would be incredible for the Gunners as they all look miserable at United.
“I saw what happened with the fan and I understand his frustration, so if Rashford wants to leave, he’s more than welcome at Arsenal and the door is open for him. Havertz was in a strange environment at Chelsea and he wasn’t happy, but he has smiled at Arsenal and I can finally see his teeth – I want that for Rashford.”
Arsenal are also reportedly interested in Napoli’s Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen as they search for a new centre-forward.
