Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested in signing Alvarez but the Argentine forward prefers a move to their rivals, Real Madrid.
Atletico Madrid have tried to persuade Alvarez to join on loan, with Angel Correa and Rodrigo de Paul talking to him while on Argentina duty.
However, Manchester City want a permanent deal rather than a loan, which Atletico might not afford.
Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea are also interested, but Alvarez’s dream is to join Real Madrid, according to The Athletic.
A move to Real seems unlikely due to their already crowded forward line, with Kylian Mbappe and Brazil teen wonder Endrick joining a squad that won the UEFA Champions League and La Liga double this season.
If Manchester City do not lower their reported €80m price tag or accept a loan deal, a move within Spain looks doubtful. Barcelona had shown interest in Alvarez when he was at River Plate but chose to sign Ferran Torres instead.
Alvarez had an impressive season with Manchester City, scoring 11 goals and providing nine assists in 36 league games, helping the team win their fourth consecutive Premier League title. He also finished 7th in the 2023 Ballon d’Or.
On 22 December, Alvarez scored twice and assisted in Manchester City’s 4-0 win over Fluminense in the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup final. His first goal, at 40 seconds, was the fastest in the competition’s history.
Alvarez joined Manchester City on 31 January 2022, his 22nd birthday, for around £14 million.
