The Netherlands boasts a squad of talented players heading into the 2024 European Championships which is set to take place in Germany and they will be confident of performing better than their round of 16 exit last time out.
The Orange have experienced considerable progress since the last Euros, going on to impress at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar where they reached the quarter finals.
Soccernet.football takes a look at some of the players who could shine for the Dutch national team when proceedings get underway in Germany.
7. Virgil van Dijk
Van Dijk has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world since joining Liverpool where he has enjoyed a lot of success.
The 30-year-old will be instrumental for Netherlands at the Euros as the team will be depending on his leadership and experience on the pitch to navigate their way through the competition.
With Van Dijk leading a back line that boasts names such as Nathan Ake, Denzel Dumfries and Daley Blind, The Orange will be confident they can hold their own against any opposition attack.
6. Frenkie de Jong
The 27-year-old midfielder’s ability to receive the ball from the defensive third and progress it up the pitch makes him such an asset to any team he lines up for.
The Orange will be hoping the Barcelona man can stay fit throughout the tournament as he will be pivotal to how Ronald Koman sets up his side in Germany.
5. Teun Koopmeiners
The 25-year-old was arguably Atalanta’s standout performer this past season and his efforts may well earn him a big move away from Bergamo this summer.
Koopmeiners impressed massively in attacking midfield for the Nerazzurri and should be featuring in the same position for The Orange in Germany.
The 2023/2024 Europa League winner will be looking to impress the top European sides who already have him on their radars so we should expect a good showing from him.
4. Jeremie Frimpong
Frimpong is coming off the back of a sensational season with Bayer Leverkusen who displaced perennial Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich to lift the title for the first time in their history.
The 23-year-old enjoyed an incredible personal campaign, racking up 14 goals and 12 assists across 47 appearances for Leverkusen from the wing-back position where he mostly operated.
If Frimpong can maintain the levels he displayed throughout the 2023/2024 season, he will be instrumental for Ronald Koman and his side.
3. Xavi Simons
Xavi enjoyed a fine campaign on loan with RB Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain and has become a highly sought after target for many top clubs around Europe.
The 21-year-old will be hoping he can get a chance to impress for the Netherlands in Germany and given his numbers for Leipzig this past campaign, the youngster will be deserving of any chance he gets.
2. Donyell Malen
The 2023/2024 campaign was Malen’s best in a Dortmund shirt, having notched 15 goals and 5 assists across 38 appearances for the Bundesliga side.
Malen is one of Koman’s best attackers heading into this year’s Euros and the Orange will be hoping he can provide some inspiration for them up front.
The 25-year-old winger should have no problems holding down a starting berth on the right flank in Germany as he appears to be the best option available to the Dutch.
1. Cody Gakpo
Gakpo has managed to put up decent numbers in Liverpool colours despite not being at his absolute best since swapping Eredivisie for the Premier League.
The 25-year-old plays primarily on the left wing but is occasionally tasked with leading the attack as a center forward and this may be the case when the tournament commences.
The Liverpool forward is certainly capable of leading The Orange’s attack in Germany, however, the big question is whether he will be capable of leading them all the way.
